Signature vodkas
Back to the roots of vodka

Inspired by Russian recipes dating from the 18th century, Pierre Solignac brings the golden age of vodka to life through three references to original flavors.

Produced in France near Cognac, Solignac vodkas are made using artisanal know-how which gives them all their character as well as great authenticity, and thus regain all their letters of nobility.

 Pierre Solignac, creator of vodkas

Expatriated in Russia for almost ten years for a French spirits group, Pierre Solignac developed a taste for vodka and became a true enthusiast.

Originally from Eastern Europe, this spirit has its roots between Russia and Poland and is traditionally produced from cereals (rye, wheat) and/or potatoes.

Among the most consumed alcohols worldwide, vodka today largely comes from an industrial process using continuous distillation in a column still.
By discovering very old Russian recipes dating from the 18th century, Pierre Solignac will become interested in the taste of vodkas from this period, considered the golden age of this brandy in Russia.

Indeed, from 1765, Empress Catherine II decreed the production of vodka a state monopoly.

This thus becomes a privilege of the aristocracy.

This measure will provoke real emulation within the noble families who will compete in creativity among themselves in order to develop recipes in accordance with Russian cuisine.

This “gastronomic” aspect of vodka, the opposite of what could be found on the market at the end of the 20th century, will inspire Pierre Solignac and make him want to recreate vodkas full of flavors to discover them again .

He wishes, in fact, through his creations, to restore the taste of vodka, too often considered as a neutral alcohol, and thus restore the taste of vodka to spirits lovers.
It took him no less than ten years to successfully develop the three recipes and create Maison Solignac in Brie-sous-Archiac, in the Cognac region of Charente-Maritime, in 2010.

A rye vodka distilled in a Charentais still

Recreating a vodka in the 18th century Russian style was not easy.

But Pierre Solignac's determination to revive an artisanal and authentic eau-de-vie has imposed different biases on him from which he will not deviate.

Among them and undoubtedly the most essential, the production of this vodka from a cereal much more rustic and tasty than wheat: rye.

This was mainly used at the origin of Russian vodka which was called “bread wine” until the 19th century.

The choice of still was also crucial.

In Russia, distillation is now mainly carried out in column stills, which consume less energy and water, and allow continuous distillation.

On the other hand, to reproduce a vodka with the taste of yesteryear, it was necessary to use a more traditional still, of the Charentais type or “pot still”, used in the production of cognac or whiskey.

Pierre Solignac then turned to one of the French regions most recognized for its history, its know-how and its expertise in distillation and spirits production: that of Cognac.

A still is thus designed specifically by the Chalvignac company, specialized in distillation equipment and based in this region.

Charentais type, the still has a specific capital through which the alcohol vapors will rise.

Usually designed for double distillation, this still has been designed differently for vodka which is distilled only once.

Started at low temperature, the distillation is carried out by a gradual rise in temperatures over a long period of time – up to 15 hours – in order to obtain an eau-de-vie of great finesse, very expressive and elegant.

With a strength of 65% when it leaves the still, the vodka is then reduced to 40% or 43%, depending on the recipe.

With a rather oily texture, it offers a lot of substance in the mouth.

100% natural and artisanal

Three recipes are now developed within Maison Solignac, each inspired by a Russian recipe from the 18th century.

All are based on rye alcohol in which different ingredients are macerated for a more or less long period depending on each one, then distilled in the traditional still.

The supply of the various products was also the subject of every attention in order to find a level satisfying the final quality requirements and favor a French origin.

For the Initiale Vodka, infused with rye bread, the latter is supplied by the Archiac bakery, close to the village where Maison Solignac is located.

Its maceration lasts approximately 15 days in order to offer softness and deliciousness to the tasting.

The milk used for the “Lemon & Milk” recipe comes from the Surgères dairy cooperative, in Charente-Maritime, while the organic Verna lemons come from Spain, chosen for the quality of their pulp, particularly juicy, with few seeds. and acidity.

These two ingredients will macerate separately before being distilled.

As for Cumin (Carum carvi in Latin), it comes from Lithuania or Poland.
With its natural ingredients and artisanal production, Solignac vodka is proud to claim the label “made in France”.
