Nestled in the heart of Graves, a few kilometers from the Garonne, in the commune of Illats,
are the 37 hectares of Château de Lionne.
Since 2007, when Véronique Smati took over the property, the vineyard has received the most attentive care
to restore this vintage to its former glory. Véronique Smati, supported by a quality team including
oenologist Grégory Dalla Longa (trained by Denis Dubourdieu), strives to bottle the superb freshness of the magnificent Graves terroir.
The Graves terroir is linked to the birth of the Garonne and its changes over time. It is the only wine
in France bearing the name of its terroir. Our soil is made up, as its name suggests, of gravel, pebbles
and sand. This soil acts as a thermal regulator, promoting solar absorption and reflection to contribute to better grape ripening. The climate in the Graves region is mild and temperate, thanks to its proximity to the Garonne River and the Atlantic Ocean. The Landes forest protects us from the westerly winds.
At Château de Lionne, the vineyard is managed carefully to bring out the full quintessence of the grapes.
Château de Lionne wines are blended wines made from a subtle and variable mix of several grape varieties. The red wines benefit from a balanced grape variety where Cabernets, Merlots and Petit Verdots draw all the aromatic richness of the Graves terroir. Balanced, supple, fresh, and fruity, the red wines
of Château de Lionne are enjoyable wines that can be enjoyed in their youth, but also after a few
years of aging. White wines made from Sauvignon and Sémillon are fruity, refined, and fresh. In short, these are elegant, complex and flavorful wines, with aromas of citrus and white fruits
and where exotic notes blend elegantly with the minerality specific to the Graves terroir. A real gem!
Since Graves is not exclusively reserved for blends, in 2014, Château de Lionne took on the crazy challenge of magnifying this exceptional terroir with a 100% Merlot wine with the revealing name “l’Envolée”.
This single-varietal wine was a resounding success, going against the grain of what we know from Bordeaux. Its fresh ruby red color hints at the aromatic intensity on the palate. A perfect balance, a pleasant and enjoyable finish, enough to win unanimous approval from both connoisseurs and novices.
In 2019, Château de Lionne obtained HVE 3 (High Environmental Value) certification, which allows
it to focus its vineyard work on less conventional viticulture, fully aligned
with current, most environmentally friendly approaches.
2022 A VINTAGE MADE OF EXTREMES
The year 2022 in Bordeaux was marked by extreme weather conditions, but it ultimately produced a promising, even exceptional, vintage.
Spring brought a few rainy spells and even a few late frosts, but overall, it was the heat waves that hit the vineyards that were a cause for concern.
Temperatures hovered around 42°C, which can create water stress for vines that can hinder ripening. In our case, the forest surrounding our vines didn't suffer from water stress.
We were able to benefit from a beautiful late season, and the harvest began in the sunshine.
